However, this national holiday was officially recognized until 1940, by decree of President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río.

In 1934 was issued the law on the characteristics and use of the Coat of Arms, Flag and Anthem National, in which it is mentioned that each 24th of February is celebrated as tue officially Day of the Flag of Mexico.

Prior approval of the General Congress of the Union, February 24, 1984, entered into force the new law on the Coat of Arms, Flag and Anthem National, whose article 10 states the following:

“The 24th of February is set solemnly as Flag Day. On this day we should broadcast special programmes on radio and television for the dissemination of the history and meaning of the National Flag. On this date, the powers of the three orders of government will be days civic commemoration, veneration and exaltation of the National Flag.”

Why is celebrated that day?

The day of the flag of Mexico is celebrated on the 24th of February. On the same day in 1821, all the parties fighting in the Mexican War of Independence, joined forces to form the Army of the Three Guarantees as proposed by the Plan of Iguala, created by Agustín de Iturbide, declaring officially to Mexico as an independent country. After Agustín de Iturbide, was the general Vicente Guerrero, the second military swear allegiance to the national flag.

This is so, in memory of the proclamation of the Plan de Iguala by Agustín de Iturbide on the same day of February, 1821, under the banner of the three guarantees – considered as the first national symbol of Mexico.

With the passage of the years, different flags have represented Mexico, but the flag that was used in the Declaration of Independence, with some changes, is the flag that currently represents Mexico.

Historical review of the first flag of Mexico

The first flag of Mexico was born in 1821 when Agustín de Iturbide was inspired to represent the guarantees that would have the mexicans to declare the Independence of Mexico.

During the declaration of the Plan of Iguala, Iturbide wore a flag with three colors, white, green, and red, arranged in diagonal stripes and a gold star in each color. The guarantees represented Iturbide’s depicted on the flag, the white represented the catholic religion, which was the only accepted, the green the Independence of Mexico from Spain and the red the equality and the union of mexicans and spaniards and the castes.

When the Army Trigarante (Ejército Trigarante) arrived in Mexico, Agustín de Iturbide hoisted the flag and proclaimed the Independence of Mexico. During their empire, the flag underwent modifications, the stripes became vertical, and for the first time is placed a crowned eagle in the center of the same.

After the fall of Agustin de Iturbide in 1823, the Constituent Congress stated that the adoption of the flag of three colors as a flag officer, but with some changes.

The eagle was stripped of the imperial crown and is depicted with open wings and at the foot of the same, were placed branches of laurel and oak.

The colors of the flag originated from the flag of the Army Trigarante or the Three Guarantees in 1821. Originally the meaning of the colors was: Green, Independence, White for Religion and Red for Union.

The meaning was changed due to the secularization of the country (that is to say the separation of the state with the church), led by then-president Benito Juárez when he changed the meaning to: Green: Hope; White: Unity and Red: Blood of national heroes.

How and who celebrate the day of the flag of Mexico?

Every year the mexicans recite, sing and do honors to the flag, remembering the heroes who gave Mexico freedom and homeland to celebrate the day of the Flag of Mexico.

To celebrate this date which represents the consummation of the independence of Mexico, the federal government and the state governments to organize a parade along with the armed forces of Mexico, represented in the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), in it are involved the troops of the mexican army, the air force of Mexico, and the naval forces.

Since the presidential decree of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, with an effective date of December 27, 1969, is celebrated in an official way a parade accompanied by an emotional speech by the president in course and state authorities, in each case, in addition, in schools takes place a representation of the triumph of independence in which you can see one of the flags of ancient and also the current flag.

In the institutions, agencies and civil organizations of the Federal Public Administration, of the governments of the States and the Municipalities will render honors to the National Flag mandatory on the 24th of February, in addition to the 15 and 16 September and 20 November of each year.

<ins class="adsbygoogle abajoresp"
     style="display:inline-block"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-8806496717135445"
     data-ad-slot="9308676720"</ins>

The day of the flag of Mexico is the day of the year officially established to honor this patriotic symbol that identifies all mexicans.
